Staffordshire potters began producing small figures of Benjamin Franklin during his time in England in the 1760s and 1770s. This version, dating shortly after Franklin's death in 1790, shows him wearing a medal around his neck, likely the Copley Award presented to him by the Royal Society of London in 1753 for his experiments on lightning and electricity. It has been suggested that this ceramic portrait depicts Franklin grasping a kite string in his right hand while gazing upwards towards the kite.

All "Old Ivory" Syracuse China was produced between 1927 to 1960. Though, on April 30, 1932, the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad inaugurated the "George Washington" as C&O's top-notch train. It was one of only two all-air-conditioned, long-distance trains operating in America. This plate design was made exclusively for the infamous train. In keeping with the theme, all the sleeping, dining, and lounge cars on this train were named for people, places, or events connected with Washington's life. In the sleeping cars, the rooms were likewise given names of people associated with him. Booklets about Washington's life, followed by descriptions of the new train, were issued in great quantity, the train appeared in advertising in major magazines and on C&O timetables, and the whole introduction was given huge attention and publicity. A country starved for good news latched onto the railway's confidence in the future and willingness to spend money to introduce a new train. The April 1952 issue of Tracks Magazine reported that... "The George Washington was also known for its diner and its beautiful china."
