As with a number of tradesmen, Frederick Bassett fled New York City during the American Revolution. He had worked in New York from 1761 to 1780, but settled in Hartford, Connecticut where he continued to produce pewter works from 1780 to 1785. He returned to New York in 1785 and worked until his death in 1799. During his short time in Hartford, Bassett must have influenced some of the Connecticut pewterers, namely Samuel Danforth, who adapted some of Bassett's designs.
