Gallery Label:
This relatively plain vessel represents the basic, stripped-down model of the mid-eighteenth-century New York tankard, devoid of the ornament that clients often requested from New York silversmiths. The tankard may have been a wedding gift for Elbert Haring (1706-1773) and his wife, Elizabeth Bogert. Haring's wealth and status, suggested by his ownership of this substantial tankard, is underscored by the estate inventory taken after his death in 1773. This tankard, undoubtedly one of two listed in the inventory, was bequeathed by Haring, along with the rest of his "wrought plate," to his wife Elizabeth, who outlived her husband by fourteen years.
Provenance:
Elbert Haring (1706-1773), who married (2nd) Elizabeth Bogert (1714-1787); to their daughter Elizabeth Haring (1743-1821), who married John De Peyster (1731-1807); to their daughter Elizabeth Schuyler De Peyster (1772-1858), who married Uriah O. Champlin (1772-1838); to their son Christopher Champlin (b. 1821), who married Louisa H. Barker (1845-1881); to their nephew Evan B. Thomas (1881-1966); purchased by Francis P. Garvan through the Anderson Galleries, New York, 1924; donated by Garvan to Yale University Art Gallery, 1930; sold by Yale University Art Gallery in 1951 to Mrs. Waldron Phoenix Belknap, the donor.

Gallery Label:
This mug was manufactured by silversmith Samuel Kirk, who established his firm in Baltimore in 1815 during the city's economic boom following the War of 1812. Although Kirk silver today is often associated with the intricate "Baltimore repoussé" style that he introduced in 1828, this mug bears evidence of the firm's diverse capabilities during its early years. The vertical seam under the handle indicates that the mug was constructed with machine-rolled sheet silver, a significant step toward mechanization of the silver industry. While spinning on a lathe, the body of the mug was ornamented with bands rolled directly into the silver stock.
Provenance:
Hebe Grayson Stewart Gedney (1792-1853), who married Thomas F. Gedney (1790-1853); descent unknown; acquired by Mary Mildred Hammond (Mrs. Algernon Sydney Sullivan, 1836-1933), the donor.

Gallery Label:
This bowl was used to administer the holy sacrament of baptism to two-month-old Maria Isabella Grim (1808-1890) on January 8, 1809. According to a handwritten note in the Grim family Bible, the baptism was performed by Bishop Benjamin Moore (1748-1816), the rector of New York City's Trinity Church. The prominent band of engraving encircling the bowl identifies it as a christening gift from Maria Isabella's grandparents David (1737-1826) and Mary Grim.
