Gallery Label:
Meriden Britannia Co. acquired the Rogers Brothers Co. and began producing sterling flatware with the "1847 ROGERS BROS" stamp ca.1878-1880. When International Silver Co. succeeded the Meriden Britannia Co. (ca.1898) they continued to produced wares with the "1847 ROGERS BROS", though they did not include their own company stamp on wares until after 1928. (see Noel D. Silver and gilt bow-form serving tongs in Tiffany & Co. "Japanese" pattern with oval-end arms decorated with bird and flowers; arch engraved with cipher "MAB" in gothic-style characters; one pierced scalloped shell grip and one pierced and fluted foliate-form grip with seven tines; makers' hallmarks stamped on the underside of one arm.

These serving tongs were given to the donor's mother, Marie Antoinette Baker Davis on the occassion of her marriage to Fellows Davis in 1871.
The "Japanese" pattern on these tongs was designed by Edward C. Moore and patented on April 18, 1871; the design was introduced in the same year and became inactive by 1904. The same pattern was introduced without the "side knobs" on August 3, 1954 under the name "Plantation" pattern and was later changed to "Audobon" pattern, though it has no connection to Audobon's work, on October 16, 1956 and is still produced today.
