Cast and wrought silver presentation salver; oval tray with convex sides with an applied, die-rolled foliate band around the rim; center of the tray engraved with foliate scrolls that form two cartouches one above the other; top cartouche engraved, "Presented by the/ Officers of the 5th Regiment/ to their Col./ Christian Schwarzwaelder,/ on his birthday./ Dec. 13th.. 1856;/ as a token of their esteem of him as an/ Officer, and a Man." in script above an engraving of an American shield, drum, cannon and cannon balls surrounded by draped U.S. flags and spears; four cast foliate scroll feet applied to the base; makers' marks stamped on the underside of the rim.
