Vertical rectangular linen darning sampler with various colors of silk floss; various darning stitches simulating woven patterns across top border in satin-stitched checkerboard, herringbone, twill and plain weave patterns; horizontal rows of five different patterned alphabets and numbers separated by rows of various stitches in center; inscription of date, place, name and age, "New York 1810 Fair Street July 31st Joanna De Peyster Cooper 14 years of age"; verse at bottom; stitches include cross, eyelet or queen's, satin and Maltese cross.

Gallery Label:
Joanna's sampler gives her New York City address as Fair Street, renamed Fulton Street in 1816. She was the daughter of prominent Dutch Reform minister Rev. Gerardus Kuypers and later the wife of Dr. Peter Van Zandt. Interestingly, Joanna chose to stitch the anglicized version of her family name-"Cooper"-rather than the Dutch "Kuypers."

This cap came to the Society's collection new in 1937. Following the stock market crash in 1929, with the ranks of the city's unemployed, New York City was the national headquarters of the Communist Party USA. Many young members, mostly children of immigrants, were from the City College of New York and Brooklyn College. The C.P.U.S.A. was influential in the development of unions at that time, including the Transport Workers Union, led by Communist members Mike Quill and James Larkin.
