Copperplate-printed cotton textile fragment printed in pink on a white ground; chinoiserie repeating pattern of an open window looking out on a pastoral landscape with a plantstand and large basket of flowers in the center, windows draped with tapestries abd tassels held up by two bald eagles, two urns in the lower corners with acorn finials and images of asian men on them; pattern bordred on either side by flowering vines.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Bed rug with wool yarn pile sewn through woven wool foundation; rectangular with rounded lower corners and design consisting of elaborate blue and green scrolling vine with large ocher blossoms on tan ground, the vine with base at bottom center and symmetrical branches that extend upward along either side; blue cotton twill backing.

Gallery Label: 
According to the accession records, this bed rug was purchased by the donor from Mrs. George Helmer of Vermont. This bedcover, which Safford and Bishop describe as "one of the earliest 'discoveries' to be termed a 'bed rug,'" was made for Elihu Hyde of Chelsea, Vermont, and is said to have descended through the Hyde family, ancestors of Mrs. Helmer. It is illustrated in "Antiques," Nov. 1927, as well as in "America's Quilts and Coverlets" by Safford and Bishop.
