Metal burner unit for kerosene lamp attached to opaque white cylindrical glass font decorated with applied green glass with leaf formations; burner unit has two arms holding a metal ring to support the glass shade; a wick holder with adjustment knob, and a pierced gallery around the wick holder. Glass font has metal fitting at bottom which slides into lamp base.

Gallery Label: 
Frederick Carder of the Steuben Glass Works was Tiffany's most talented competitor. In 1904 he began producing Aurene glass, a gold metallic luster glass which closely resembled Tiffany's Favrile glass. In 1913, Tiffany filed a lawsuit claiming infringement, but the suit was dropped because Tiffany's patent was too general.

Gallery Label: 
"Favrile" was the trademark term, patented in 1894, used for all glassware manufactured at the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, later Tiffany Studios. Tiffany's was the first American glass to gain international fame for aesthetic rather than merely technical reasons. These luxury products also exemplify his flair for combining design, promotion, and new industrial and labor practices to lower manufacturing costs.
