The first flight in a hot air balloon to exceed 500 km (311 miles) was made on April 8, 1835 by Richard Clayton, an aviation enthusiast. Clayton left from a Cincinnati, Ohio, amphitheater and landed nine and one half hours later in Monroe County, Virginia. To celebrate this event, a bandbox was created with printed wallpaper showing Clayton’s balloon ascending over the Ohio countryside with the word’s "Clayton’s Ascent" on the cover and sides. The series was probably marketed soon after the flight in 1835 or 1836. Most of these bandboxes were covered with wallpapers designed by Pares & Fayes, located at 377 Pearl Street.
