This early 19th century view is of exceptional interest because it shows the East River and Yorkville shore of Manhattan Island in the East Eighties when it was a favored location of the country homes of wealthy New Yorkers. The view from the north end of Blackwell's (now Roosevelt) Island opposite about East 83rd Street is west toward the Yorkville shore and up the river to Hell Gate and Mill Rock in the distance. On the Manhattan Island shore, center, is the landing of the Hell Gate Ferry.
