Tenor and opera impresario Edward Johnson was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and came to New York to study music in 1899. He later studied in Italy with Vincenzo Lombardi, the teacher of Enrico Caruso. Using the name Edoardo di Giovanni, he performed in Italy for several years before returning to the U.S. in 1919. From 1922 to 1935 he sang twenty-three roles in two hundred and eight performances with New York's Metropolitan Opera. He became the company's general manager in 1935.
