This work sketch for an engraving is based on a portrait painted from life by Thomas Sully (1783-1872) in 1825. The painting, which was made for W. H. Morgan, a Philadelphia print seller, is now owned by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society at Philipse Manor Hall, Yonkers, New York (A. S. Cochran Collection). Durand exhibited the engraving at the National Academy of Design in 1827. N-YHS owns a copy of the print.

Earhart first flew in 1920 and felt immediately compelled to learn to pilot a plane; by 1921 she had received her pilot's license. The first woman to complete a transatlantic flight alone, she was subsequently the first woman to attempt to fly solo around the world. She disappeared over the Pacific Islands in July 1937, never completing her mission.
