Samuel Folwell was apparently an engraver of bookplates in New Hampshire around 1792. Six years later he appeared in Philadelphia and commenced painting miniatures; however, he was also listed in the city directory as a "fancy hair worker" at that time. In 1795 he exhibited two of his portraits at the "Columbianum, or American Academy of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, etc," organized by Charles Willson Peale. He is perhaps best known for a silhouette of George Washington cut from life.
