Gallery Label:
A native of England, Miller came to America in 1845 and from then until his death he lived mainly in New York. He was a prolific landscape painter in watercolor, and he also produced numerous pen and ink sketches for illustrated publications. In this self-portrait he is pictured sketching in one of his favorite haunts at Weehawken on the New Jersey shore of the Hudson River.

Gallery Label:
This little mill on the Pocantico River was one of the ancient landmarks of the Sleepy Hollow country of Westchester County immortalized by Washington Irving (1783-1859). A re-rendering by Miller of this picture (oil on academy board, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches), signed and dated 1883, was in the collection of the Old Print Shop, New York City, in 1958. The Society also has in its collection a watercolor of the dam at Carl's Mill taken by William Henry Wallace (q.v.) in 1893 after the mill vanished.
