The subject, a native of Nashville, Missouri, received his Ph.D. from Princeton and afterward joined the staff of the Mt. Wilson Observatory in California. In 1921 he became director of Harvard Observatory, where he remained for thirty years, retiring in 1951. Shapley made a signficant contribution to a more accurate understanding of the universe, particularly to laymen. He was active as a lecturer and wrote numerous books and articles on astronomy.
