Studies of Native Americans: the chief prepares a pipe while Catlin carves buffalo ribs in a bowl; Catlin wrote "No American Indians eats with his invited guest, but sits by to wait upon him, and to charge the pipe for a 'good smoke' after the feast". An iron pot hangs on a tripod of branches over a fire while women, children and a dog watch the feast from the background
