Gallery Label: 
This watercolor is one of Harvey's different epochs of the day. The artist identifed the scene as a view on a continuation of the Pennsylvania Canal on the west side of the Allegheny Mountains. In his 1851 account Harvey recalled his vist as "one of the most delightful journies the artist can call to mind," noting that the trip was taken "about fifteen years since," which would date the picture ca. 1836.
