This was one of a cluster of early nineteenth-century country homes of wealthy New Yorkers situated on the Manhattan Island shore of the East River in the vicinity of Hell Gate, where the waters of the East and Harlem rivers joined. This was the residence of Nathaniel I. Prime (1768-1840), a New York broker and banker, who purchased the property in 1807. The building stood on the block between First and York avenues and 89th and 90th streets.
