The subject was an artist, the son of Daniel and Sally (Flanders) Hoit of Sandwich, New Hampshire. His father was prominent in New Hampshire politics. When this portrait was presented to the Society the subject was identified as "A. C. Hoyt of Sandwich, New Hampshire." A family genealogy contains a signed engraving of an "A. G. Hoit" that bears a striking similarity to the present portrait and seems to clarify the identity of the sitter.
