This spoon was found in February, 1893 inside the buried hulk of a vessel during digging for a power house on the cable road at Front Street, between Broad and Whitehall Streets in lower Manhattan. The ship was probably sunk as ballast for landfill sometime between 1770 and 1820.

It was stored with the Reginald Bolton Collection in the Morris-Jumel Mansion, at 160th Street and Edgecomb Avenue. The bottle was owned by a soldier, by a member of a soldier's family or by a civilian, or was obtained from residents.

The British 38th Regiment occupied the camp during the summer of 1781.
