This blade was excavated by Reginald P. Bolton and others at a military camp at 201st Street and Ninth Avenue in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Built after the surrender of Fort Washington by American forces on November 16, 1776, the camp was occupied by British soldiers who were guarding the landing area for a ferry that crossed the Harlem River from the Bronx to Manhattan.

Pewter military buttons; buttons have the emblem, number, or symbol of their regiment on front; one button has its regiment number enclosed inside of a starburst; one has three feathers above its regiment number; another has its number in the center, encircled by an inscription along the bottom edge of the button; many buttons have crowns above their numbers, and wreathed, roped, or corded border designs. There are descriptive labels inside the frame, and small numbered labels under each button.

Pewter, brass, or bronze buttons excavated at West Point; most of the buttons are disk-shaped and solid, but five are dome-shaped and hollow; one solid pewter button has an emblem inscribed on front; one solid brass and another solid pewter button are inscribed on back; eight buttons are disk-shaped and have thin metal faces, and one of these buttons has a brass face and bone back.

These buttons were excavated in 1923 by the Field Exploration Committee from the refuse pit of the Revolutionary War barracks at West Point, a citadel in Orange County, New York built by the Continental Army in 1777. The buttons inscribed on back were probably manufactured after the war, since maker's names were not stamped on buttons until the nineteenth century. The thin-faced buttons probably belonged to officers, and may have been sent from France as part of military aid shipments.
