Starting in 1935, sales tax tokens were made in great quantities in order to give change for sales taxes. When the sales tax included a fraction of a cent, sales tax tokens were given as change to avoid over charging consumers. Twelve states issued coin-like tax tokens, which were made of aluminum, copper, zinc, brass, plastic, fiber, cardboard, and paper.

This token is the fifth version of the New York City subway token. The first was issued in 1953, followed by new versions in 1970, 1980, 1986, and this one in 1995. New York City was one of the last major transit systems to adopt an electronic fare system, which was finally set in motion with the first electronic turnstile and sale of MetroCards in 1994. The last subway tokens were sold on April 12, 2003.

American aviator Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974) made the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean on May 20-21, 1927, gaining him immediate international fame. Dubbed "Lucky Lindbergh" and the "Lone Eagle" by the press, he was showered with honors by the public. On June 13, 1927, New York City celebrated Lindbergh with an enormous ticker tape parade. This token may be one of the numerous souvenirs manufactured for the event.
