This helmet was worn by Lieutenant Robert Dorritie of Engine Company 53 (1836 Third Avenue, Manhattan) and saved his life on numerous occasions. It is one of the last custom-made painted leather helmets made for the FDNY by Cairns & Brother of Clifton, New Jersey. It was constructed in the traditional manner on a mold to conform exactly the the fireman's head. Around 1985, traditional helmets such as this one were replaced by plastic helmets in standard sizes.
