This brooch commemorates the patriotism of the five Sullivan brothers, who each enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on January 3, 1942. All five brothers were deployed on the ship U.S.S. Juneau, bound for the Pacific. The ship was torpedoed off Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942, and the "Fighting Sullivan Brothers" died together. Thereafter, no relatives were permitted to serve together on the same naval vessel.
