Gallery Label:
In John McCrae's poem entitled, "Flanders Fields," the red poppy is used as a symbol of war. McCrae, a Canadian doctor, wrote the poem immediately after witnessing the horrors of the Battle of Ypres (1915). Published shortly after the war, the poem deeply touched the nation and has become one of the most enduring war poems in history. The Veterans of Foreign Wars adopted the red poppy as their offical memorial flower in 1922. The first "Buddy Poppies" were sold on Memorial Day that year.
