Gallery Label:
Early in the 19th century, New England societies were founded in many cities. They were primarily social groups, but also provided charitable funds for indigent New Englanders away from home. The New York-New England Society, founded in 1805, made the old descendents of the Dutch so anxious, that they founded the St. Nicholas Society in 1835. Washington Irving was one of its first members.
