When Hungary's attempt at liberty and democracy had failed, America supported its cause. Thus Kossuth came to the U.S. for aid. When he landed in Battery Park, 200,000 New Yorkers greeted him, and have him an ovation second only to those previously tendered to Lafayette and Washington.
