This cane was given as a Christmas present to William H. Paine of New York City in 1876. William H. Paine (1828-1890) was a civil engineer and surveyor for the Union Army during the Civil War. He served as an assistant engineer for the Brooklyn Bridge after the war. He was also a consultant on several bridge, tunnel, and railway projects including the Hudson River Tunnel. His personal paperS are in the Library collections (MS 475).

Accession records state that the cane was used by Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891). Gordon Lester Ford was a New York Lawyer and investor in several railroad companies. In 1863 he helped found the Brooklyn Daily Union, a newspaper devoted to supporting the Union cause during the Civil War. He also founded the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Brooklyn Art Association. Ford was also an avid collector of books and manuscripts related to America and assembled what was regarded as one of the largest private collections of Americana in the world. His papers are at the New York Public Library.
