This suitcase was kept by a resident at the Andrews Hotel, a flophouse on the Bowery. It was abandoned and later donated to the Society by the hotel owner. The varied conents of the suitcase offer a poignant window into one man's unfortunate life. Included in the suitcase are welfare, disability, and hospital documents which relate that the man suffered from tuberculosis and receieved disability payments from the state of New York.

Gallery Label: 
This dog sweater and other handmade items were purchased from New York Exchange for Woman's Work during the last week of its operation in February, 2003. The Exchange was founded in 1878 by Candace Wheeler and Mary Atwater Choate to provide respectable women who needed to earn living, particularly Civil War widows, a viable means for supporting themselves. The exchange was forced to close in 2003 due to high overhead and a waning market for handmade goods.
