Manure spreading was a major industry in agricultural America during the post-Civil War period, and this cane was handed out to farmers as an advertising tool. The cheaply made walking sticks were quite popular among farmers. Before the emergence of the automobile, most men and many women used canes for walking and for climbing onto wagons and stage coaches.
