Description: 
Rectangular leather makeup kit with flat hinged lid; lid opens to reveal mirror inside lid, with base divided in compartments for cosmetics and accessories. Included are three short cylindrical glass containers with metal screw tops, one with label for "Elma Cream;" two stackable interior boxes filled with safety pins and hair pins, a box of "Exora Dry Rouge," two animal paw rouge applicators, a comb, a ring, two natural sponges, scissors, and an eyelash comb. Lid has carrying handle and leather strap for opening; locking mechanism (key missing).

Gallery Label: 
This traveling makeup kit belonged to Gertrude Kellogg, a prominent actress on the New York stage. She made her debut in 1870 and played opposite such actors as Edwin Forrest. At the peak of her career in 1888 she played the role of the Queen in "Hamlet." Ms. Kellogg's diaries are in the Historical Society library. Her diary entry for August 22, 1887 mentions the purchase of a makeup box for $13.50.
