Alfred E. Smith (1873-1944), a native of New York City who began his political career in Tammany Hall, served four terms as Governor of New York, from 1918 to 1921 and from 1923 to 1928. While Governor, he championed progressive policies for New York City. He is also remembered for the housing development he sponsored at 174 South Street, the site of his birth, that still bears his name.
