Description: 
Rectangular wooden sewing box with flat chamfers and rounded edges, covered with several coats of lacquer and decorated with gold leaf; on flat, hinged lid, border of flowers and butterflies, with oval garland of flowers at center; rectangular panels with chamfers painted on four sides of box, with flowers painted on four chamfered sides; gilded and carved feet; inside, complicated series of compartments in tray covered in lacquer, with numerous divisions and several removable components, with some ivory accessories fitted into sides; two compartments with lids with gold leaf decoration and ivory pulls; tray contains ivory sewing implements including spatula, spike, thimble, four thread winders of various construction, one vise-like tool, three needle threaders, four flat pieces with cut-out circles and straight edges, fourteen bobbin-like pieces, two circles, one clip, one top-like piece, and three narrow sticks; also contains pink textile cushion in one tiny compartment, metal needle, three cut-out pieces of paper, hand-painted with flowers and leaves, and two gilt paper ornaments.

Description: 
Wooden spool box with two stepped tiers, drawer inside lower section with wooden pull, and pincushion surmounting top which can be lifted off, away from finials; upper section contains metal prongs to hold eight spools from which the thread is drawn through bone eyelets on each of three sides; also holds 11 thread winders of various shapes and sizes, and roll of lace wrapped around wooden spool; drawer holds piece of paper with two needles stuck through it, hook with ivory handle, ivory bobbin, two metal needles, and stub of marking pencil.

Gallery Label: 
This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.
