Description:
"Games of Jerome Park Steeple Chase, Balky Horse and Pool" board games in a paper covered wood and cardboard box that resembles a book (folds open) with "Balky Horse" and "Pool" on the interior and "Jerome Park Steeple Chase" on the exterior; one side of the interior with a circular board numbered 1 through 10 with horses heads in the corner and on the other side two sets of cards in two rows representing the numbers 1 through 10; exterior of the box chromolithographed with an oval race track with numbers around the edges an traps at six intervals, image of three men on horseback at the bottom of the oval, men jumping traps in medallions in the corners and the directions lithographed in the center of the track; playing pieces include a paper instruction booklet, a five piece wooden spinner with wooden arrow and three chromolithographed jockey and horse playing pieces in wooden stands in a paper covered cardboard box with an image of the front of a stable labeled, "JEROME PARK/ STABLES".

The Game of Tight Rope carries subtle references to America's post-Civil War Reconstruction (1865-1877). Players travel across a precarious rope bridge, trying to avoid plunging into the swift waters below. A nearby rescue boat, piloted by Uncle Sam, carries an African-American child representing the Freedmen's Bureau, an agency formed in 1865 to aid and protect newly freed blacks.

Target games found in traveling carnival shows, seashore resorts, and fairgrounds throughout the nation stereotyped African-Americans as comical entertainers and provided a sanctioned outlet for white contempt of blacks. Players of Hit or Miss, inspired by target games, move along a gameboard checkered with blank spaces and African-American faces, calling out "hit" or "miss" depending on the spin of the teetotum.

The game of "Peter Coddle" in all its various editions was the most popular reading game of the 1880s and 1890s. The game was based around the story of a country boy's misadventures in New York City. Parker Brothers and the other major game manufacturers produced many variations, all neatly packaged in attractive boxes that were usually much larger than their contents required.
