Gallery Label: 
This sign may be from the tavern of Elijah Fitch (1778-1841), located a half mile west of Bolton, Connecticut. The tavern was later kept by his son, Captain Asahel Fitch. A related tavern sign, for D. Loomis' inn, dated 1811, is in the collection of the Connecticut Historical Society (acc. # 58.10.1) and may have been made by the same sign painter.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor.
