The subject was born in New York, the son of John and Elizabeth (Weaver) Greenwood. He turned to his father's profession, dentistry, in 1818, from which he retired in 1829, at the end of a distinguished career.

Josephine Victoria Sackville-West was the daughter of Lionel Sackville (1827-1908), second Baron Sackville, and Josephine de Ortega, a Spanish dancer. On June 17, 1890, she was married to her cousin, Lionel Edward Sackville-West (1867-1928). Their only child, Victoria Mary ("Vita") Sackville-West (b. 1892), was married to Harold Nicolson.

Jean Jacques Bérard was the second husband of Adelaide Marie Elisabeth Bossard, the daughter of Louis and Marie Anne (Fleury) Bossard of Dondon on the island of Santo Domingo. In 1787, Bérard took his wife, her two sisters, and several of their slaves to New York, where they rented a house on Reade Street. Bérard himself returned to Santo Domingo in 1789 and died there of pleurisy ca. 1790.

Maria Louisa Potter was the eldest daughter of Clarkson Nott Potter (1825-82), a prominent lawyer and congressman, and Virginia (Mitchell) Potter. She was married to Joseph Leslie Cotton (1855-1929) of New York. This posthumous portrait shows her in 18th-century costume, her powdered hair elaborately dressed and adorned.

The subject was the daughter of General Roy Stone and Mary M. Stone of Mendham, N.J. Her first husband, Lawrence Turnure, Jr., whom she married in London on July 15, 1890, was the son of a prominent New York banker and financier. After his death, in 1902, Mrs. Turnure moved to Paris where on July 1, 1903, she married to Lord Augustus Debonaire John Monson, ninth Baron Monson. They made their home at Burton Hall, Lincoln, England.

Susan LeRoy Fish was a daughter of Governor Hamilton Fish and Julia (Kean) Fish. She married William Evans Rogers (1846-1913) of Philadelphia in 1868. Her father was governor of New York from 1849-50, and later served as secretary of state under President Grant. From 1867 to 1869 he was president of The New-York Historical Society and was its vice-president from 1881 to 1888.

Julie Grinnell Storrow was the daughter of Thomas Wentworth Storrow of Boston and the grandniece of Washington Irving. She married Stephen Van Rensselaer Cruger (1844-98), great-great-grandson of John Cruger, Sr., on April 21, 1868. While living in Russia while her husband was the American ambassador there, Mrs. Cruger wrote her first novel, "A Diplomat's Diary" (1890), under the pen name Julien Gordon. She married her second husband, Wade Chance, in 1908; the couple divorced in 1915.

The subject of this miniature was the daughter of Paul and Annie Rutherford (Morgan) Dahlgren. Her father was at one time the consul general in Rome; her maternal grandfather was the Rev. William F. Morgan, rector of St.Thomas Church in New York for many years. Miss Dahlgren was known for her philanthropic and religious activities.

Pauline Georgine Warren Dresser was the daughter of Colonel George Warren Dresser of the U.S. Army and Susan Fish (LeRoy) Dresser. She married George Grenville Merrill (1866-1938) at Trinity Church, Newport, R.I., on December 1, 1897. Mr. Merrill was an Episcopal clergyman and served as rector of parishes in Tuxedo Park and Buffalo, New York, and Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Florence Davis, the daughter of John H. Davis of Washington Square, New York, married Terence John Temple Blackwood in Paris on October 16, 1893. Blackwood succeeded his father as second Marquess of Dufferin and Ava in 1902. After her first husband's death, in 1918, the marchioness became the second wife of Richard George Penn, fourth Earl Howe (1861-1929) in 1919.
