Adeline E. Coster was the daughter of Henry A. Coster and Maghdalena (Will) Coster. She married Peter Augustus Schermerhorn (1811-45) of New York on December 9, 1935.

The subject, the son of Augustus Wright and Catharine (Bogart) Wright, was a wholesale dry goods merchant on Pearl Street in New York. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandson.

When this portrait was presented to the Society the subject was identified only as "Grandfather Crane."

Ellis was the son of Dr. Samuel Corp Ellis and Elizabeth (Van Horne) Ellis, the father of Augustus Van Horne Ellis, and the father-in-law of the donor. He was a brigadier general in the California militia and high sheriff of San Francisco.

The subject, née Elizabeth King Hawley, was an amateur artist. Adelaide Milton de Groot, the artist and donor, was one of her daughters.

Israel Corse, Jr., was the youngest son of Israel Corse, Sr., and his second wife, Abigail (Cornell) Doty Corse. This miniature was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.

Sherrill lived at Hudson Falls (Sandy Hill), Washington County, New York, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century.

Elizabeth Bend Polk was the daughter of Lieutenant David Peale Polk, U.S. army, of Baltimore. She was a great-grandniece of Charles Willson Peale and became the wife of Mr. Keeling in 1858. Her son was the artist and donor.

It is possible that the man represented in this miniature was the brother of Abigail Cornell (Mrs. Israel Corse, Sr.), whose portrait was given to the Society by the same donor.
