The subject of this portrait was a member of the firm of De Groot and Peck and was president of the Hudson River Bank. His second wife was Elizabeth King (Hawley) de Groot, mother of two of his five daughters, one of whom was Adelaide Milton de Groot, the donor. The miniaturist Brinati studied in Paris at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in the 1870s, in which decade this portrait was most likely made.
