The subject was born in West Granville, New York, the eldest son of Colonel Duty Shumway and Eunice (Kinney) Shumway. He graduated from Union College and studied law with his uncle Horatio Shumway in Buffalo. After practicing for a while in West Granville he moved to Chicago where he built up a lucrative business. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandson.

The subject was born in Braintree, Mass., where he was apprenticed in the tobacco trade. He was working as foreman of a tobacco concern in Brooklyn in 1802 when Edward Savage, who had heard of Scudder's skill as an amateur taxidermist and naturalist, hired him as curator of his Columbian Gallery of Painting and City Museum. By 1810 Scudder had bought a major part of Savage's collection and opened his own museum, the New American Museum, which survived until his death.

This painting was formerly titled in TMS "Self-Portrait in the Tenth Street Studio." The conservation survey in the file says that the painting is marked "T. Le Clear on lower right. Thomas Le Clear was beard's father-in-law. Until research can be completed to determine if there was any previous documented titles, I have re-titled the painting "William H. Beard in his Tenth Street Studio."

Jane Keteltas, the daughter of Abraham Keteltas and Jeanne (d'Honneur) Keteltas, was married to James Beekman in 1752 and bore him ten children. Painted as a companion to the portrait of James Beekman (1962.64), this picture was for some reason in need of retouching only five years later, according to an entry in James Beekman's account book which states that he paid John Durand L1.10.00 "for Altering my Wifes Picture." James Beekman ordered the picture's frame from New York City carver Stephen Dwight.
