Catskill Clove, also known as Kaaterskill Clove, is a spectacular gorge in the heart of the Catskills that was a hallowed subject for two generations of Hudson River School artists. Durand's painting depicts the Clove from a distant height, following the deep panoramic vista of heavily forested mountains adn tracing the winding course of Kaaterskill Creek. The rift runs from west to east past Tannersville and Palenville, villages where artists and tourists could find modest accommodations. In October 1848, Durand had reported the presence of nine other artists also working there.
