The subject, the eldest son of Lewis Morris (1671-1746), was the second Lord of Morrisania Manor and judge of the vice-admiralty court for the provinces of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. He inherited large tracts of land in New York from his father. In 1722 he became a member of Governor Burnet's council and in 1737 was chosen speaker of the New York provincial assembly, in which he served until 1750. His second wife, Sarah Gouverneur, was the mother of Gouverneur Morris.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor.
