This family portrait was painted not long after Dunlap's return to New York from London where he had spent three years studying painting--presumably with Benjamin West. Under the guise of a family portrait the artist represented himself as capable of painting a picture of a noble and lofty theme--a scene from Hamlet. Nonetheless, he failed to earn a living as a painter, and pursued a theatrical career instead. Many years later, in 1833, he exhibited this work at the National Academy of Design.
