The subject is probably Mary (Lawrence) Greenoak, the widow of John Greenoak, who married Joseph Hallett of Newtown, Long Island, in 1728. The portrait was painted in New York, and was based on a mezzotint by John Smith (1699) after Sir Godfrey Kneller's portrait of the Countess of Ranelagh.

Although this portrait was not included among the nine portraits listed in Ames's account book for 1825, both Bolton and Cortelyou examined the painting and its inscription and pronounced it authentic.
