Gallery Label:
According to the accession records, this object was used on an old barn near Goshen, New York. It could also have been located above a chimney, on top of a rod on which it revolved. In this case, it would have been used to prevent downdrafts, and to allow smoke to escape from the chimney. The Gabriel figure and the paddle-shaped piece would have served to rotate the ventilator so that smoke could escape through the opening.
