Ellis, who was active in New York from 1842 to 1864, specialized in bas-releif portrait medallions such as this. He based this bas-relief on a bust taken from life by John H. I. Browere. Ellis's work was the model for the American Art Union medal issued in bronze in 1848 and reproduced as the frontispiece to the "Transactions" of 1848. When the Art-Union disbanded, among the several pieces it gave to the Society was the die for the Stuart medal, which also bore Ellis's signature.
