This is an on-the-spot sketch of a baptismal ceremony which took place at Sandy Hill (Hudson Falls), New York, in September 1817. Milbert recorded the following account of the incident in his Pictureespue Itienerary: "Upon my return from Whitehall to Hudson Falls, I was invited to attend the baptism of an anabaptist girl eighteen or twenty-years-old. Custom decreed that the minister should immerse her in the river, and this ceremony was performed at ten o'clock on a damp, cold morning...'
