Description:
Treasurer of the society 1878-1884. Presented by his son Charles A. Sherman, May 1913
Gallery Label:
The subject came to New York from Long Branch, New Jersey, in 1828 and became a clerk in a grocery house, eventually becoming a partner in McCoon and Sherman, later Sherman and Collins. He later became president of the Mechancis National Bank, New York, and was treasurer ot The New-York Historical Society from 1878 to 1884. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his son.
