Bottom of bowl is marked in Japanese characters that translate as,"Eiraku, Japan".
Description:
Late-Edo period blue and white painted bowl ornamented along exterior with peonies superimposed on frieze of trailing flowers and foliage; a gadroon-style border is located along bowl bottom; interior is decorated at bottom with blue and white peony medallion; interior sides painted with two red and gold phoenixes, Buddist symbols, and framed along lip with wide gold and red floral border.
Gallery Label:
Eiraku (b. 1795) was well-known potter, located in Kyoto and active about 1810-45. Eiraku was known for producing patterned ware with exterior blue and white decoration, and with interior red and gold borders and ornament.
