Wood, steel, and iron percussion carbine; iron furniture; hinged center of breechblock; stamped marks on lockplate, barrel, barrel band, receiver, and breechblock.

Burnside carbines were among a group of weapons whose use during the Civil War heralded the rise of breech-loading firearms and the decline of muzzle-loaders in the postwar years. Designed by Union general Ambrose Burnside, they were widely used during the war by many cavalry regiments, including the 1st New Jersey.
