Description:
Wrought silver cake basket; shallow, crater-shaped body with six chased panels around the interior sides; each panel decorated with foliate repoussé chasing; cast, c-scroll and foliate band applied around the rim; two cast scrolled leaf handles applied to the rim on opposite sides of the body; body seated on a six-sided scalloped, splayed foot; engraved beneath the rim, "The bequest of Mrs. Isabella Henderson to her niece Eliza I. Maitland." in script; engraved around the footring, "Presented by her to her nephew Robert Lenox Belknap. Jan. 1st. 1887. Waldron Phoenix Belknap to Waldron Phoenix Belknap Jr. Jan. 1, 1942" in script; maker's marks on the base.
Gallery Label:
The original owner, Mrs. Isabella Lenox Henderson (1757-1836), of Kirkcudbright, Scotland was a sister of Robert Lenox. A portrait of her niece Eliza S. Maitland to whom it descended is in the Society's collections.
